PDF/A is the ISO-standardized version of PDF designed specifically for long-term digital preservation. While a regular PDF might display differently in 30 years if its fonts are missing or its embedded content depends on external resources, a PDF/A is self-contained — every font, color profile, and resource is embedded inside the file so it renders identically forever. Many institutions require PDF/A for archival submissions: court filings, government records, academic theses, legal contracts, and corporate compliance archives. The format strips out features that interfere with long-term reproducibility (JavaScript, encryption, external links, audio/video) and embeds everything the file needs to render on its own. Dokfo's free PDF-to-PDF/A converter applies these transformations automatically and produces a PDF/A-1b or PDF/A-2b compliant output ready for archival submission. This is the right tool when a court asks for PDF/A, when your university requires PDF/A for thesis submission, when your records-management system flags a document as non-compliant, or when you're building a long-term digital archive that needs to outlast software changes.

Why Convert to PDF/A With Dokfo?
ISO 19005 Compliance
Output meets the PDF/A-1b or PDF/A-2b ISO standard for archival PDF — accepted by courts, governments, universities, and corporate records systems worldwide.
Embeds Fonts Automatically
All fonts used in the document are embedded into the file, so the PDF renders identically even on systems that don't have those fonts installed — essential for decades-long readability.
Strips Non-Archival Features
JavaScript, encryption, external links, audio, and video are removed. PDF/A is intentionally restricted to ensure files render reliably 50+ years from now.
Privacy-First Conversion
Files are processed via TLS-encrypted pipeline and permanently deleted within minutes. Suitable for legal, medical, and corporate archival workflows.

Conversion Is Secure and Private
PDF/A conversion requires server-side processing for proper font embedding, color-profile application, and compliance validation. Dokfo's pipeline is TLS-encrypted: your PDF is uploaded over HTTPS, converted in an isolated worker, and the PDF/A is returned. Both files are permanently deleted from our servers within minutes. We log nothing about file content. For ultra-sensitive archival material, redact identifiers first using Dokfo's Redact PDF tool.

Frequently Asked Questions About PDF to PDF/A
What is PDF/A and why should I use it?
PDF/A is an ISO-standardized version of PDF (ISO 19005) designed for long-term digital preservation. It embeds all fonts and resources so the document renders identically decades from now, regardless of software changes. Many courts, governments, universities, and corporate archives require PDF/A for submitted documents.
What's the difference between PDF and PDF/A?
PDF/A is a stricter subset of PDF. It embeds all fonts, applies a defined color profile, and prohibits features that interfere with long-term reproducibility — no JavaScript, no encryption, no external links, no audio/video. The visual content stays the same, but the file becomes self-contained and archive-safe.
Which PDF/A version does Dokfo produce?
Dokfo produces PDF/A-1b or PDF/A-2b compliant output, both widely accepted standards. PDF/A-1b is the most conservative (broadest compatibility); PDF/A-2b allows JPEG2000 compression and layers. Both meet typical archival requirements.
Will my PDF look different after conversion?
No. The visual content is preserved exactly. Only the underlying structure changes — fonts get embedded, color profiles applied, and prohibited features removed. The reader sees an identical document.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF to PDF/A?
PDF/A prohibits encryption, so the password must be removed first. Use Dokfo's Unlock PDF tool (with the password) to remove protection, then convert to PDF/A.
Are my files kept on your servers?
No. Files are uploaded over HTTPS, processed in an isolated worker, and permanently deleted within minutes.
Is PDF/A larger than a standard PDF?
Slightly, because all fonts must be embedded. The size increase is usually 5-30% depending on how many fonts the original used. The trade-off — guaranteed long-term readability — is worth it for archival use.
Will the PDF/A have a watermark?
Never. Dokfo never adds watermarks to converted files.
